But that’s okay with me when they are designed as pretty as they are by New Bohemia Signs. The other day I posted about Gold Leaf, but today is all about the amazing sign work from this one company. View their most recent work on Flickr, much time will be spent there – trust me.

I just discovered this lovely blog of Alan Ariall’s hand lettering. The Art of Hand Lettering shows the process of hand-lettering from sketches to completion. I love how he includes the sketches, the inked drawings, and the final pieces. It’s not magic folks, it’s hard work.

For Jessica and Jared, I created a hand-drawn invitation combining their color palette with a Sailor Jerry tattoo theme that was based on the aspect of sailing! The couple plan to arrive (as well as guests) to the ceremony site by boat! They were really great to work with as they wanted it to be fun and unique. I really love the way they turned out and it happens to be one of my favorites so far!

The big draw of amusement parks is sensory overload and I was in complete heaven with all of the signs and lettering littering the spaces of Knoebel’s Amusement park. I’ve gone there since I was a kid and it hasn’t changed much, thankfully. The park is family-oriented and still has many trees around for much needed shade unlike many other parks. Knoebel’s is a great place but even greater is it’s signs.

I failed to find any answers as to where the signs are made, or if they are hand painted. I noticed some of them use vinyl lettering but many more look as if they are hand painted which I just love! And a big bonus, almost all of them (if not all) are on wood! I also wonder who manages the aesthetic of the park? Who is able to continue this tradition of hand-lettering in this modern age? I hope to hear back from the park and when I do I will post my findings here in an update.

Hello illustration and hand lettering, you fine thing! I was just revisiting the site of Nate Williams and realized I never posted about his work! I’m slacking, I know.

His bio goes something like this:

I made the decision to pursue my passion for having absolutely no money and eating unhealthy amounts of rice .. I wondered “How does one achieve such a goal?” BECOME AN ARTIST/ILLUSTRATOR full time..

I’m working on a [fill in the blank] for someone and I don’t know what to call it. Is it a logo? Is it a mark or is it an icon? I’m not sure but I’m still working on the end result – client satisfaction. I sketched out with pencil at first and then in pen/marker a few rounds of different symbols … oh wait, is it symbol? Could be. And have picked out 9 of the best to present to the client. How do you present your ideas to clients? Through email with a PDF? Do you personally visit them and present the work mounted on boards? Since many of my clients live in different locations not anywhere near me, I prefer the email method with the best kind of file I can pick for them. These days you’ll be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t know how to view a PDF but on occasion I do send JPG’s.

I’m also working on a self-promo featuring some hand-lettering of my own, and if you’re familiar with my blog – you know that I’m a HUGE fan of hand-lettering. So I wanted to start including mine in my designs and figured this was a great way to get started.

It’s one of the things that I love most to do and I hope it will eventually show in my work. Can’t wait to give it a go!

While looking around on Jeff Canham’s site I discovered that he is also a sign painter. Hand drawn lettering and illustrations that are beautifully done. Jeff is an artist and designer from San Francisco, California and currently works for New Bohemia Signs as a sign painter. You can see a few of his examples here but take a look at his full posting of his work at his website.

Finally after a few months, a new interview has arrived on LetterCult with John Solimine, the brains and hands behind Spike Press. His work is creative and inspiring and although I don’t like posting too many images, you can always view loads more at his website. And don’t forget to read the interview on LetterCult.
