How to design a font

A very nice series on How to Design a Font from start to finish over on the GoMedia Zine website. I’ve always been fascinated by this and the amount of work put in the stage prior to going digital. And then once a font designer moves to the computer their work has only just begun! Part 1: Get inspired Part 2: Draw Up a Storm! Part 3: Make it Digital Part 4: Finishing Touches

Lou Dorfsman

Sadly, the web is buzzing with news about the life and work of Lou Dorfsman who has recently passed away. If you’re an in-house designer, I would think that Lou Dorfsman would be your hero. Working for CBS for nearly 40 years joining in 1946 and rising to become the Vice President and Creative Director for advertising and design. In an article published for The Cooper Union, it reads: “Dorfsman’s farreaching influence at the network extended to ideas that went beyond pure graphic design to marketing and advertising as well.” You won’t be disappointed when doing an online search for his work or articles about him, so get out there to get to know the…

Cheesesteak on the Brain

Yesterday the family and I went to Adventure Aquarium in Camden and while down that way decided to pick up some good eats at Geno’s. Yum! Jason Santa Maria (a grad from KU) has a great post on finding the closest thing to a Philly cheesteak in New York City. When you come from Philadelphia it tends to creep up on you how much you miss the good food (cheesesteaks, Tastykakes, etc.) that are regional items. Jason formed a Cheesteak Crawl event in Manhattan and through scoring cards determined the winner of this prestigious honor. Oh, and he displays the results in a fantastical way on his website too. Where was my invitation to this…

Rubber Ducks to save the day

If you see a lonely little rubber duck swimming along somewhere, pick it up! NASA scientists have dropped 90 rubber ducks into holes of a glacier in an effort to understand why glaciers speed up during summer months. The ducks are attached to a football-sized probe and have an email address and messaging prompt for anyone who discovers one! If the duck is discolored, do look at it, the yellow tends to fade over time as has happened in previous experiments. “Right now it’s not understood what causes the glaciers themselves to surge in the summer.” The rubber ducks will help to tackle this problem by carrying a probe with them so their progress can…

Whoever is having this man’s baby is very lucky, how thoughtful! A blog featuring 1001 rules for my unborn son. Really nice read. On his side bar it says ‘Let’s get some things straight before I get old and uncool.’ Number 179. Make curfew. Sneak out later to meet her. Don’t make a habit of it. You’ll miss the danger.

Design Rules (Ridiculous)

RidiculousDesignRules.com is a new blog-style website featuring a place to unload words and phrases, advice and suggestions from yourself or maybe even colleagues about design and it’s practice. The site has fun sections such as ‘Most Ridiculous Design Rules’. “Design means being good not just looking good”, or “Form follows function” are some examples. There’s a ridiculous poll where you can vote on which designer is the most ridiculous and to the right of that is a Show Gallery powered by Flickr. On the majority of the home page are a good amount of articles on many of these ‘design rules’ and have some good content. I have a feeling that ridiculousdesignrules.com will become quite…
