Marisco

I just saw these amazing labels over on The Ministry of Type. I’m not a drinker, but I would buy Marisco just for the calligraphy on the labels. Each name in The King Series is preceded by the words “The Kings” and by it’s neatly crafted name of Bastard, Thorn, Wrath, Favour, and Sticky End. A great story to go with wine, intriguing and smart.

After being helicoptered out to the island to photograph and research my client’s ancestral history, I returned to New Zealand and came up with the name for each – relating to a specific story discovered in that research. The names were then also matched to the characteristics of a specific wine variety. A top NZ calligrapher, Peter Gilderdale was then invited to create the stunning calligraphy that features on the labels (authentic to the relevant 12th &13th century period of history, but with bit of a modern twist).

This is a beautifully done Save the Date featuring calligraphy by May+Belle accompanied by a letterpress tag by Dependable Letterpress. The keys were sourced at a flea market in Paris. Simple and effective. Love it.

Hassan Massoudy

Speechless. I’m really left speechless on these works of art created be Hassan Massoudy, a calligrapher. I’ll let a statement from Hassan’s website do it justice:

Calligraffiti

I’m above impressed with the work of Niels Shoe Meulman and his work on Calligraffiti. Calligraffiti is the combination of graffiti and calligraphy. It’s intense, beautiful, and every second spent on the site is worth it. There is a grit or dirtiness to the work that just draws me in with the traditional Blackletter or Fraktur style (used quite a bit in Germany) with a sense of urgency and care.

He is listed to have a workshop/lecture in Philadelphia at Drexel University. I am so there if he does.

Sea Legs

I would have loved to have seen “Sea Legs” A Collaborative Journey of Jolby & Ashley Forrette, but it ended on March 20 and was in Portland, Oregon. So the odds were against me anyway. But the images, the artwork, the lettering … sigh … so wonderful. SO much more to see on the website, take a gander.
