Signs at Knoebels

The big draw of amusement parks is sensory overload and I was in complete heaven with all of the signs and lettering littering the spaces of Knoebel’s Amusement park. I’ve gone there since I was a kid and it hasn’t changed much, thankfully. The park is family-oriented and still has many trees around for much needed shade unlike many other parks. Knoebel’s is a great place but even greater is it’s signs. I failed to find any answers as to where the signs are made, or if they are hand painted. I noticed some of them use vinyl lettering but many more look as if they are hand painted which I just love! And a…

Shocard Rodeo

Letterhead Fonts is one of my favorite type foundries and it has just released it’s newest typeface, Shocard Rodeo. Designed by Charles Borges’, the new font features different sized letters for uppercase and lowercase and includes over 20 bonus alternates! Don’t forget that you can set your own type before you buy using their TypeTester!

Roanne Adams

A graduate of Parsons and once an employee of Wolff Olins, Roanne Adams has a trove of good work on her site. Roanne runs a multi-disciplinary studio out of New York City with a quite impressive client list. But the client list isn’t just for bragging works, just take a look at the work and you too will understand why some of the largest brands have gone to Roanne Adams for their design needs. I really love the work above for Parlor, the logo is simple and impressive. P.S. Roanne, we may be related in some way. My grandmother was an Adams. Mary Elizabeth Adams to be exact, I’m just sayin’ – you never know….

Lettering by Raphael Boguslav

Ooh la la! I love me some lettering in the evening, especially when it’s divine as the work on the site of Raphael Boguslav – a calligrapher and hand-letterer. A unique tidbit from his biography: His classmate Milton Glaser got him his first job in design and later joined the small studio as art director. Samples of his work above from his website, and below is my favorite find amongst his fine work. I couldn’t believe these lettering samples above, so beautiful, so breathtaking!

Laurence Philomene

Awesome photography from the young Laurence Philomene from Montreal, recently featured in Parasol Craft, Issue 1.

Pin Ups

How amazing are these pin-ups with some line art included? The calendar image above was created for Ridgid Tools but you can also see more of George Petty’s work here. It’s ashame that there isn’t an official website for his work. It’s so gorgeous! Thanks to this link on NotCot.org

The Wounded Artists Project

I can’t help but have a heart even though designers are supposedly very cold people, where that stigma has come from I don’t know. And if you too indeed have a heart you will want to know about this project called The Wounded Artist Project. What is it you ask? It’s a non-profit that sends beginner artist kits to wounded soldiers to help occupy them during their healing process. Drawing can be very therapeutic and even they’re not expecting high-level art to come out of it, you never know! Unfortunately, this little charity is still in start-up mode and needs the help of the community, so if you have unused art supplies or art instruction…

Paul Lee Design

Tattoo Invitations

Some time ago I had the idea of creating a tattoo-themed invitation inspired by the Sailor Jerry tattoos and thankfully a bride came along who wanted just that! Jamie and William wanted something different. From the bride “It’s SO hard to find invitations that aren’t completely normal and fit our theme.” So after sending some examples from previous drawings (shown above) I immediately went to the drawing board and began with sketches from references that I sought out online. Once I had them to where I like them, I sent it over and she was excited! From there I had to make the design work with her colors –bright pink, orange, and brown– a very…

Paperjam Design

PaperJam Design has been a favorite bookmarked agency of mine. Creative doesn’t even begin to explain some of the projects that they have managed to produce. Their work for the Belfast Chidren’s Festival has been ongoing and never fails to impress me. Show above. Their portfolio was recently updated and I highly recommend you check out their work!
