New Type: Phaeton
Maybe it’s just me, but I’m loving all of the new typefaces being brought to my attention. And a recent release over at Veer is very exciting. Phaeton, designed by Kevin Cornell with Randy Jones – “Phaeton, like Olduvai, evokes the freshness and uniqueness of hand-drawn type, yet allows for easy typesetting. A high-waisted, condensed serif face with a distinct Victorian flavor. Featuring cupped serifs and ball terminals on some characters. The font’s nearly 600 characters includes a large number of alternates, ornaments, decorative banners, picto-glyphs, swash capitals, and 49 wordmark glyphs for ‘and,’ ‘the,’ ‘with’ and many more. Wow.”
Now that’s a nice summation of a font. I can see this one quickly showing up on packaging, can’t you?
If you’re not familiar with Kevin’s work (the staff illustrator at A List Apart) or his website, then I feel sorry for you because you are missing out on a truly unique spirit. He’s also a participant over at The Superest which you shouldn’t miss either. And did I mention he’s from the city of brotherly love? That’s Philly for those of you who don’t know. He’s just cool.
