Craig Ward

Combine illustration and type and you’ll get the work of Craig Ward. He resides in London and spends his time creating outstanding typography and designs at Chi & Partners and through his own Freelance opportunities. His website Words Are Pictures showcases his commissioned and self-initiated work mostly in the editorial and publishing fields. He’s received accolades from the likes of the ADC Young Guns and his work appears in many books and magazines from all around the world. His work displays his knowledge of type and how to combine letterforms with illustration. I was really impressed with is work for the Art Director’s Club, Germany with the Ace of Spades (shown below), a set of…

10½

Studio Ten and a Half has quite the impressive portfolio with strong graphic designs using type and color. It is a london-based studio started by two designers who met while working at Pentagram London, who further on down the line began this new studio with strong work as the foundation. The studio is run by it’s founders, Jessie Earle and Charlotte Bolton

Guerilla Girls

Who? What? Where? Guerilla Girls is a fierce group of women exposing unfair treatment with facts, humor and … gorilla masks. Guerrilla Girls, Inc., www.guerrillagirls.com, was established by two founding Guerrilla Girls and other members to continue the use of provocative text, visuals and humor in the service of feminism and social change. They have written several books and create projects about the art world, film, politics and pop culture. They travel the world, talking about the issues and their experiences as feminist masked avengers, reinventing the “f” word into the 21st century. They may wear masks (and for good reasons) but their words and messages should not be taken any less seriously. For more…

Ampersand – Issue 1

Ampersand, Issue 1 for Winter 2008 is online. It’s an online publication for and by the Kansas City Art Institute. I like the DIY article above, too cute! I never heard of folding a piece of paper in half as “hamburger” style? Can anyone help me out with this one?

Killer Coats

With the bitter weather so present, it’s the perfect time to be thinking about coats with killer style. Introducing Lia Lintern, the label of designer Julia Lintern. Her professional carrer began as a structural aerospace engineer designing solutions for damaged airplanes. She maintaned a side career with puppet, costume and fashion design which then paid off. The reward? Killer coats that can be purchased and custom fit for each individual, and the custom sizing is FREE. Not bad considering the price you pay for a coat that just barely fits. Now you can get one that fits like glove.

Canada Type

I am an ongoing supporter of independent type foundries. There is just something wonderful about purchasing from and browsing the font creators’ website. Canada Type is an independent digital type foundry located in … you guessed it, Toronto, CANADA. They have a nice library of fonts available for purchase and also provide custom services if you are looking for something extra special. The fonts are affordable, of exceptional quality and they have a nice variety to pick from. Most of their fonts are of the Decorative sort but not Dutch (shown below) which is an exception with it’s beautiful serif appeal. Definitely do not hesitate to visit the websites of type designers, you will be…

Logical Ceramic

Most times ceramics are organic, handmade and fluid. But for Anouk Omlo, they are logical. The Helica series is inspired by mathematical patterns using Fibonacci spirals and the Golden Ratio. Beautiful, inspiring, and logical.

Castle

I love color combinations and bed linens, and even more … I love them together! Castle is the store front for Rachel Castle, a Sydney-based designer who went from a branding and design agency  in London to homemade linens and artwork. “The brand represents a love of beautiful, often handcrafted or handprinted, pieces for the home.” If you have a love for the handmade and desire graphic, colorful bedding or artwork then you should go visit Castle.
