Design Trends with Gael Towey

On Tuesday I was lucky enough to catch the tail-end of the program Design Trends on Martha Stewart Living Radio on my Sirius player. The program is on Tuesdays at 4pm on Channel 112 and features Gael Towey, the Chief Creative Officer for Martha Stewart. The episode I caught was an interview with Eames Demetrios, son of the dynamic duo Charles and Ray Eames. I was so happy to find something like this to listen to on Sirius and can’t wait to hear more! The interview touched on (of course) his parents, his unique name and his project dasfilmfest, putting the spotlight on movies about design, architecture and sustainability. I love this excerpt from his…

First-Round Fridays

I’ve decided to travel back a bit and dig up some old comps, sketches or whatever I might be able to find lying around. This week, it’s initial drawings that were created for a logo project. The project? An Alaskan maritime center start-up needed a logo with the intent of being a catchall of commercial fishing archives and information on commercial fisheries in Prince William Sound, Alaska. The input? Rugged, rustic commercial fishing, possible inclusion of fishermen, vessels, fish, nets, anchors, etc. The center is to preserve historical commercial fishing information, so the logo was to encompass those initiatives. I really loved creating these and am still sad that they weren’t developen any further. The…

Fountain

Fountain is ending the year with a new website and four fresh typefaces! In an email I received this news and immediately clicked-through to view the new online presence of Fountain type foundry. Take a look at their new Type Catalogue shown above, very nice! The new typefaces include Atlantik, Dessau, Flieger and Tycho. My favorite has to be Tycho.

Spool

Are you crafty, can you sew? I for one probably could but just choose not to. My mom on the other hand is amazing at sewing anything you can throw at her. That’s probably why I like Spool, a Philadelphia-based place for sewing enthusiasts or the newbie. They offer classes, a store to buy your fabrics and more. Located at 1912 South Street in Philadelphia, learn more by visiting the website.

Markers

No commentary, it’s just a cool image seen on FFFFOUND! When will I get my invitation to this fabulous site?

Thumbs Up!

This has been making all of the design blogs but I can’t resist. Remarkable work by Hanna Beckman, a Swedish designer. First seen on the Lovely Package site on the post Condamine

Zach Johnson

I found these drawings today courtesy of Stumble by Zach Johnson. I love the explosions of color coming form the desaturated bodies. And for some reason I find humor in the titles of the pieces. Would you expect these to be called “Lime Frosted” or “Chocolate Dipped”? I really like the work shown above. It looks as if he’s a cola and someone shook him up and popped his top. I’m really smitten with Zach’s illustration work. Take a look!

Clock Type

Nadine Grenier, a student has created a kinetic installation called O’Clock. The message is made up of 500 clocks and in 12-hour increments you can read the message which translates from French to English: “Time passes, and every time the time passes, there is something that fades.” Very nice and please do check it out. View the orignal post where I found it thanks to Stumble.
