Book Preview | Graphic Design Referenced
Graphic Design Referenced is the new visual guide to the language, applications, and a history of graphic design by the well-known couple Byrony Gomez-Palcio and Armin Vit of Under Consideration. It’s a book that will provide an intense overview of the elements that make up the graphic design industry. Exxon sketched
I saw this tidbit posted on Design Observer and if you know me, I click on anything about sketches. This is especially nice because nowadays clients expect a finished logo on the first round. Exxon began as a simple sketch in 1996 and became their official logo in 1972 and then a worlwide known mark. The logo was designed by Raymond Loewy, an industrial designer who made his mark with a start in window designs in New York to locomotive designs for the Pennsylvania Railroad. Besides those that I’ve mentioned here he has an extensive resume and it’s remarkable what he had accomplished. Makes me feel like a slouch, but I’ve got a long way…
Laser Shmazer
If I ever refuse to get my eyes laser repaired, I’m purchasing glasses like that. I don’t know what it is about them but they look like so much fun! I recently saw them on the spread above at the blog Things to Look at (huge time sucker, don’t go to this site unless you want some great stuff to look at!), Sylvia Weinstock the famous cake designer and one of my favorites is Uncle Vito (played by Burt Young) from the movie Mickey Blue Eyes. I guess if I had these glasses not a day could go by that I wouldn’t look into the mirror and have to laugh. They are just the best….
Serif’s Up!
It seems that Meta isn’t the only font in town with a Serif mate. Linotype has release Frutiger Serif, a new typeface from Adrian Frutiger and Akira Kobayashi. The idea for Frutiger Serif began as an updated and expanded version of Frutiger’s classic serif typeface Meridien, which was originally released in 1957 for the French foundry Deberny and Peignot. The Frutiger Serif family includes five weights, Light to Heavy. Each weight also has two widths, Regular and Condensed. This brings the number of fonts in the family up to 10. Yet that’s not all! Every one of these fonts has an Italic companion, bringing the total number of fonts in the family up to 20….
Invitations | Ilana & Gabriel
Here’s a recent project that I just completed. An invitation ensemble that included 12 destination invitations, 100 reception Save-the-Dates and 100 reception invitations. Ilana was a breeze to work with and I think the color combination made it look wonderful! I loved the leaves for the fall invites and the starfish for the destination wedding. Fun, fun, fun! Above is a sneak peek of what I’ve been working on, but it’s top secret … invitation ensemble for Stephanie and Keith which will be very special. What you see here is the envelope accordion which will be a chocolate-brown and the ribbon will be a plum-purple. Yum!
I Heart Tugboat Printshop
While perusing the blog Oh Joy!, I found a link to the Art Star Craft Bazaar in Philadelphia that was held from May 31 to June 1. One of those who participated in the bazaar was Tugboat Printshop. Amazing print work ranging from woodcuts to etchings, the work of Pittsburgh artists Paul Roden and Valeire Lueth are captivating. I would love to see the anchor print on my wall! Prints range in price and many are limited runs. Don’t hesitate to look around on the site to see additional amazing work by Valerie and Paul. The drawings by Valerie were especially nice to see, although I don’t believe the drawings are for sale. I can…
