aol vs. Yahoo!

Is it just me or do these two home pages look too much alike. I’ve heard of people using others designs to inspire their designs but this is just ridiculous. I don’t know which came first but I use Yahoo! on a regular basis and just can’t believe the resemblance between the former and AOL. Unbelievable! I don’t know what happened, maybe it was the same design team or maybe the client said “I want it to look like their site.” Either way, don’t they think anyone will notice? I browse the internet on a daily basis and just can’t believe the rip-offs, excuse me, the inspirations done by designers. Here is a close-up from…

Friday Favorite | Blogs

Today I feel like listing my favorite blogs of interior design and general design, I think next week I’ll list my favorite graphic design blogs. Some include a variety of design and some are more specific. They are sites that I must visit on a daily basis just to see what’s new and they always open my eyes to unique ideas, techniques and products. Design*Sponge This irresistible online resource is full of ideas, products, d.i.y. projects and more. Most of the posts are by editor, Grace Bonney and at times feature a variety of guest blogs by designers, or other style-conscious bloggers. There is fresh content almost daily and the site also has a few…

Black Toast

Black Toast on the Emma Bridgewater online store has to be one of my favorite finds of the week. More and more I become fascinated with type and unique typography, and this definitely falls under those terms. Emma Bridgewater ( a real person) found her destiny by wanting to find the perfect cup and saucer and failing. Her pattern making began after working for a knitwear company where she became involved in every aspect of the fashion industry and gave her the idea to do something for herself. She designed a collection of patterns and shapes and went on to Stoke-on-Trent, searching for a manufacturer. Emma and her husband, a designer, create the amazing products…

A great coat and website

I am always on the lookout for the next best coat for me. I was on Design View website and stumbled upon Soia & Kyo. Based in Montreal Soia & Kyo specializes in outerwear. Not only are their coats gorgeous, but there site is beautifully done as well, which is why it was on the Design View site in the first place. The site uses a nice combination of Flash and PHP. The navigation is done with smooth transitions and the Online Shop is simple and has great previews of each item. Please view the site, it is much more appealing on screen at full size. The Billy coat is fairly priced at $350 and…

Friday Favorite | Swiss Design

I don’t know how long I’ve been influenced by the Swiss style, but I am in love with it! Swiss Style, also known as the International Typographic Style is a graphic design style developed in the 1950s in Switzerland. The style promotes cleanliness, readability and objectivity. Attributes of the style are assymetric layouts, use of a grid, sans-serfi type faces like Helvetica or Akidenz Grotesk, and flush left, ragged right text. Earliers works featured typography as a primary design element in addition to it’s text and the style is also associated with a preference for photography instead of illustration. Josef Muller-Brockmann A Swiss graphic designer and teacher specializing in graphic design, exhibition design and photography…

Familia by Ole Jensen

I saw this amazing cookware designed by Ole Jensen for Normann Copenhagen originally on Style-Files website and again on the Normann Copenhagen blog, Spotted. If my husband and I wouldn’t have just spent a large sum of money (even though we got it at a steal) on All-Clad Stainless (seen below) cookware, you can guarantee I would have my eyes on this amazing set! The Familia kitchen series is designed with the stylish cook in mind and sports voluptuous handles and a beautiful stainless steel finish. From the Normann Copenhagen site: “Today, the kitchen and dining room are a natural extension of one another. The dining kitchen is the family’s new common space and as…

New York City Ballet

Paula Scher of Pentagram has designed a new identity and campaign for the New York City Ballet. The New York City Ballet is one of the largest and most prominent dance companies in the world, and has launched this week with the opening of the winter season. The new identity and campaign was developed with Lisa Kitschenberg, also of Pentagram and Luis Bravo of the New York City Ballet. “The identity is designed to be powerful and graceful at the same time, like the company,” says Scher. “It looks like the city’s ballet.” I can’t help but wish for a touch of color, but with this new system it leaves an endless amount of possibilities…

Froschkonig on Etsy

I found this little knit frog on Etsy.com and had to share it. He’s too cute and would be an adorable addition to any home, or even as a top to a gift. I would nab him myself for the mere $25.00 but I’m looking for a home, so that’s out of the question. My husband would lecture me if I bought a knit frog when we are trying to save for a house. One can dream … Tell me this little guy isn’t irresistible? His name is Froschkonig and is $25 on Etsy.com from seller CraftyHedgehog. Oh, and if this guy sells she has another named Prince, here.

Friday Favorite

Starting this Friday, Jan 4 I will pick something favorite of mine and put up a short and sweet post about it. It could be about design, type, a website, a product … anything! Today, I begin with Leitura Display. I found this font on MyFonts.com and it just looks so beautiful and is a great selection for many display projects. The typeface was created by Portuguese type designer, Dino dos Santos from his independent type foundry, DSType. Since 1994 he has produced several typefaces for all purposes, from books and magazines to selected clients. Like Leitura? Try Leitura Sans too. Want to see other fonts from DSType? Try Esta, Boldina, or Cultura.
