While browsing the internet last night I stumbled upon Richard Sarson’s work from the QBN website. For the longest time I’ve been reminiscing about my old Spirograph and love for symmetry and geometry. I don’t know what it is about these fun forms that are amazingly beautiful but they intrigue me and knowing that he does this all with a compass and pigment ink on paper makes me appreciate his work even more.

His Circle Project series are what drew me in (no pun intended) to view more on his site. These are what reminded me most of my old Spirograph (shown below). His work in a sense is being a human Spirograph minus the geared templates and on slightly larger paper. The Spirograph used paper the size of Post-Its. I don’t know what it is about geometry and the awesome symmetry of these forms, but man am I loving these!

Next his Felt-tipped pen creations were just optical illusion-like made me immediately want to team him up with Marian Bantjes. I can only imagine what the two of them could come up with.

A series of 10 drawings exhibited in the Royal College of Art’s Hockney Gallery in April 2006. Each drawing measures 840 x 590 mm, there are approximately 624 circles drawn on a grid of 104 points. The grid format is devised from an interest in testing the golden section and the idea of measuring aesthetics.

So intrigued by his art, I contacted him via email hoping that he could feed me information about any prints that he had available. Unfortunately he doesn’t have them as of yet, but (good news) he is working on getting those for the future!!! Suggestion to Richard; get them up on the Coudal Swap Meat.

Richard Sarson has a promising future, he was even featured as one of 20 highlight artists of 2007 in IDPure, an annual in Switzerland and I really look forward to seeing more of him and I will be one of the first in line to snag one of his prints.
